Web Design

What’s more important? Functional performance or visual presentation.

They are both important, but which is more more important? Good web design must consider how the site will perform it’s objective. So while visual presentation is important, functional performance must be considered first.

Not everyone will agree with me, but I feel that visual presentation must yield to functional performance. Performance includes SEO or search engine¬†optimization. ¬†While flash websites with fancy landing pages are impressive, most often site owners are more impressed than their site visitors. Bright red or deep purple might be your favorite color, but it’s not necessarily a good idea to force too much of it on your site visitors. You might love music, but maybe it’s not a great idea to add background music to your website.

The site’s I build are normally for smaller owner managed businesses. That’s just the nature of my client base which has to do with the fact that I’m a one man shop. I encourage my clients to consider that the big boys do. If my client is going to sell a product or a service, perhaps they should consider what others in their industry are doing, particularly those who have had a web presence for a long time. A website with a large product inventory must be easy to navigate as well as easy to maintain. If you are trying to share an experience, whether a church or a nightclub, it’s important that your site maximize the use of photos and video. If you have a legal blog, then photo galleries in your design may not be the best use of your web space. It is important to note that there are many successful website that are not graphically busy. A website can be classy without being overly visual.

Once it’s clear what the purpose of your web presence is, you can then determine how to visually package it. Obviously if you have an established corporate brand, you want that to flow over to your web site.

Finally, if your website is to be successful, you must make it search engine friendly. That means there must be textual content, lots of it. When it come to search engine optimization, a picture is not worth a thousand words.
